EARTH: Xemí Coquí represents earth.
There are 16 known species of the tiny sonorous tree frog on the island. This Xemí honors Coquí Dorado which is believed to be extinct, although I swear I hear it chirping as I fall asleep. Perhaps it's my imagination or maybe it’s the spirit of Coquí Dorado reminding me to care for those who are left.
Coquí frogs are so named for the sound the male makes when pairing with a female.
The young are born as tiny frogs and do not go through the tadpole stage.
